A cooling relief for Eczema and Psoriasis, Inside and Out!

4 minute read

If you have psoriasis or eczema you’ll know the craving for something calm and cooling for your skin. We’ve found (through our experience, and your feedback) that sea moss can soothe inflamed, itchy skin both inside in the diet, and out as a topical compress.

Sea moss (all kinds) contains bioactive compounds that have been linked to potential therapeutic effects in alleviating annoying and, often life-changing, symptoms of eczema and psoriasis.

Seamoss for the skin

Some of the science indicates that seamoss contains polysaccharides (basically sugars), particularly carrageenan, which offer a cooling, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and moisturising effect (this is in the same way a traditional oat bath can feel calming!)

In eczema and psoriasis, inflammation plays a huge role in exacerbating symptoms, which leads to that classic hot skin irritation, redness, and itching. Carrageenan acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory by reducing pro-inflammatory compounds and reducing the activity of inflammatory enzymes (it’s mega anti-inflammatory!)

Sea moss also contains a different kind of polysaccharide that promotes skin hydration by forming a protective barrier which prevents moisture loss and supports skin elasticity. This barrier is also antioxidant, and it may balance the skin microbiome (yep- just like your gut has a microbiome, your skin does too!), promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria while inhibiting microorganisms that could irritate your skin.

Intuitively, most people with eczema or psoriasis want to clean and moisturise their skin, but a lot of commercial soaps contain a concoction of chemicals that can irritate the delicate skin of psoriasis and eczema. We’ve designed our all-natural seamoss soap to be a clean and simple, self-loving way of getting all of the benefits of seamoss onto your skin without the harshness of most other soaps.

Seamoss for skin internally

Perhaps you know that topical applications just don’t help your skin at all -you can still get all the skin-health benefits from seamoss!

Internally, seamoss also offers potential therapeutic benefits for eczema and psoriasis, just in a slightly different way. Those same polysaccharides that make seamoss so moist and cooling externally, taken internally, can modulate the immune response which is often a big part in eczema and psoriasis. Carrageenan does this by improving pro-inflammatory compounds.

Sea moss also contains essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are integral for maintaining skin strength and function. These delicious nutrients contribute to skin repair and regeneration, which bolsters the skin's barrier function and resilience from the inside out.

Sea moss is also high in fiber, which is amazing at supporting gut health and promoting the elimination of toxins, which may indirectly alleviate symptoms of eczema and psoriasis by reducing internal inflammation.

That strong fibre content in seamoss is also prebiotic! These prebiotics feed a healthy gut microbiome, which has been increasingly recognized for its role in modulating immune function and skin health.
